Club Weekly Notes Feb. 2018

The Intervarsities Indoors were held in Athlone Indoor Arena on Friday 9th Feb.
David Kenny, representing CIT, continues to improve in the Race Walk event where he finished in second place of the 2000m in a fantastic time of 8:06.
Rossa Foley, representing Tralee IT, was third in the WFD with a good throw of 7.48m.

National Juvenile B, Masters & Intermediate Cross Country.
The final athletics Cross Country for this season was held in Galway on Sunday 11th Feb. The National Juvenile B, Masters and Intermediate races were held in freezing conditions with a few snow showers thrown in for good measure. The worst of the weather was during the Juvenile races so well done to all those young boys and girls who competed.
We had the McCarthy sisters in action with young Rhian first up in the U11 1000m distance. Rhian, competing out of age, ran a very gutsy race to finish in 50th place out of 100 competitors.
Next up was Eabha in the U13 1500m race. Eabha competing at national level for the first time ran a solid race, holding her position right through to finish in 33rd place. Eabha was also part of the County team to win Bronze. Well done.
Shauna McCarthy ran the U13 2500m race. Shauna ran very well and placed herself in second place very early into the race. Shauna continued to open up a gap from third place but was unable to gain ground on the leader. Shauna finished in second place. However, she later heard she was not eligible for an individual medal after receiving a Munster province team medal last November.

Next up we had our Master Womens 4000m race. By now the course conditions had deteriorated greatly with no good running available in the 2K loop. the luscious grass was quickly replaced by a continuous mat of deep stick mud. There was a large field of 180 athletes spread out over the course with our five club team mixed in all fighting their own battles for positions.
Maria McCarthy lead the team home to finish in 8th place overall and winning individual bronze in her O40 age category. Just three places behind was Mary Daly who had an outstanding run and placed 6th in her age category. Next was Caitriona Barry who again ran very well to come in 52nd overall and 11th in her category. Marie McKenna was 112th and Grainne Tierney 138th. The ladies were 6th club team and 5th county team which is a great achievement for such a small club. Well done to you all.
George McCarthy competed as part of the county team in the Intermediate 8000m which was the final race of the day.
By now the course was so muddy that it would be a test to those who have good strength and endurance as opposed to speed. George ran a very solid race and was continuously gaining positions throughout the race as the conditions were sapping the energy out of other competitors. He continued to gain ground right up to the end where he finished in 21st place overall and third home for the county. Unfortunately the county team just missed out on a bronze medal. Equaling the points for third (Dublin) but on count back lost out. Well done to everyone who competed for our club throughout the whole cross country season as we can look back on many individual and team achievements.
