Club Notes March 2017

Below are club notes for the last two weeks. Thank you for your continued support

The Munster Juvenile U13-U19 Indoor Championships were held in Nenagh 25th & 26th Feb.. Cian Spillane ran a great final 200m to win the U14 800m distance race in a time of 02:19.73. Elaine Norris competed in the U19 60m Hurdles where she won gold in a time of 11.85sec. Neeson O’Shea competed in the U18 60m & 200m sprint, he did not medal but is gaining great experience. Leanne Cronin competed in the U18 Shot 3Kg, She finished in 5th place with a throw of 8.23m.

The final race of the Gneeveguilla AC 5Km Spring Series took place in Killarney on Saturday 25th Feb. The club was well represented and they all did very well. A special thanks to Gneeveguilla AC and all the volunteers who organised such a great event over the four weeks. The following club members received prizes for completing three or more of the races. In the senior women’s, Maria McCarthy was 2nd overall, her daughters Shauna was 6th and Rhian 10th. Marie McKenna had a great race series finishing 5th lady overall. Christine Spillane first in O40, Bernie O’Mahony first O50, George McCarthy was fifth male overall and Jerome Foley took second in the O50.

David Kenny took part in the Manx Harriers 10K Open Race Walk held in the Isle Of Man on Sat. 25th Feb. in dreadful weather conditions. David came 7th overall in the 10 km, but 4th in his category. He achieved a personal best for the 5K. David was on target for a sub. 51min in the 10K but lost some time over the last 2K where he ended with a time of 53:24mins. Great performance
The Kerry County awards ceremony was held in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney on Sat. 4th March. The counties top athletes were given recognition and awarded for their outstanding achievement in athletics over last year. The following athletes were awarded. Maria McCarthy for Masters cross country, Emma Prendiville, special merit, for her achievements in Race Walking, David Kenny for Junior Cross Country, Cian Spillane for Juvenile Cross Country. Siofra Foley & Patrick Kearney were worthy recipients of  the club award for their commitment in athletics. The Kerry Women’s Cross Country team was awarded for their representation at National level. Maria McCarthy & Bernie O’Mahony were part of this team.


The National Masters Indoor Championships were held in the AIT Indoor Arena on Sunday 5th March. Maria McCarthy competed in the 3000m race where she won her category in a time of 10:23.42. Jim O'Shea was first in the High Jump (1.25m) and second in the Long Jump (3.80m). Michael O'Connor was first in the 3000m Race Walk with a time of 17:53.07. Sean O'Shea was second in the Shot Putt with a throw of 10.13m.

Club Training:
Cardiorespiratory, Strength, Endurance & Flexibility Exercise Class every Tuesday @ 7pm indoors at Farranfore Sports Hall,  Coached by Maria McCarthy, this programme is designed to improve all the components of fitness that constitute physical fitness of an individual. €5 per class

Juvenile Indoor Training: Thursday's  at 5pm in the Sports Hall, Farranfore. €2 per session.  New members welcome.

Secondary School /Junior / Senior training every Thursday starts back again at 6:40pm in GAA grounds Farranfore from Jan12th. This is endurance training for all levels with emphasis on running form and technique. €2 club member, €4 non club member.
