Club Weekly Notes, Sept 26th

The third and final race of the An Riocht AC 5Km Road Race series was held in Castleisland on Wednesday evening 21st Sept. Maria McCarthy finished 4th lady overall and first in her age category.
The Killarney 10 mile road race took place on Saturday 24th of September it what was meant to be a very wet and windy morning. Thankfully it did not turn out as bad as predicted.The race, in its third year, attracted almost 300 participants. It is an element of a fundraising drive now underway to support the development of a 200m micro track and a floodlit all weather pitch area which will be situated on grounds leased from the St. Brendan's Trust(St. Brendan's College Killarney). Our club was well represented, Ger Ladden was first over the line in a time of 70mins. He was 3rd in his age category. Caitriona Barry (71mins) was third lady overall. Timothy Horgan finished in a time of 73mins. Marie McKenna (77 mins) third in her age category and Bernie O'Mahony (84mins)  second in her age category.

Cross Country Season kicks off next weekend with the County Novice & Juvenile Even Age Cross Country. This will be held in the Demesne, Killarney, field next to the children's playground. First race will be at 11am which is normally the Women's Novice, U23 & U18 race. This will be followed by juveniles U10 with the final race been the Men's Novice & U23.

Club Training:
Juvenile Training is on every Tuesday and Thursdays in Farranfore GAA grounds starting at 6pm. Open to all registered juveniles aged 8yrs (Born 2008) and upwards. This will be in preparation for the Cross Country Championships  €2 per session

Cardiorespiratory, Strength, Endurance & Flexibility Exercise Class every Tuesday @ 7pm indoors at Farranfore Sports Hall,  Coached by Maria McCarthy, this programme is designed to improve all the components of fitness that constitute physical fitness of an individual.

Secondary School/Junior / Senior training every Thursday starts at 6:40pm in GAA grounds Farranfore. This is endurance training for cross country preparation. €2 club member, €4 non club member.

Maria's Strength, Endurance & Flexibility Classes

Our Indoor Cardiorespiratory, Strength, Endurance & Flexibility Exercise session is on on every Tuesday @ 7pm at the Sports Hall in Farranfore.

The class, lasting for one hour, will consist of a program developed by World Masters medalist, Maria McCarthy, who has a National level 4 qualification in exercise health studies & personal training and a Level 2 National Athletics Ireland coach.

This is held indoors and is an effective method of exercising that can be enjoyed by a variety of people. The programme is designed to improve all the components of fitness that constitute physical fitness of an individual. The most essential components for maintaining fitness for life and sport include:
- Cardiorespiratory Fitness
- Muscular Strength
- Muscular Endurance
- Flexibility
Being physically fit also contributes to our overall health and total fitness. Total fitness includes social, mental, emotional, nutritional and medical fitness. It protects you against cardiovascular disease, increases your bone density, lowers cholesterol, reduces blood pressure and improves sleep quality. As a general rule, engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiorespiratory activity each week.

Time: Tuesday nights @ 7pm.
Venue: Sports Hall Farranfore.
Session fee: Pay as You Go €5 

The Community Hall and pitch is located in Farranfore village. Just past the Garda station, there is a road to the right (sign posted Firies GAA). The hall is located about 100m at the end of this road. GPS: 52.172649,-9.546777

Congratulations to all those who completed the Charleville Half Marathon on a wet Sunday 18th Sept.

Club Weekly Notes - Sept 12th 2016

On Sunday 11th Sept the club hosted their Annual Juvenile Open Sports Day in the GAA Grounds. There was a good turnout from local clubs and Limerick considering the dismal weather conditions. The High Jump competition had to be cancelled due to the high winds. Well done to all the participants in competing and we hope to see you all again next year.

Juvenile Open Sports Day - 11th Sept.



Juvenile Athletics Sports Day on Sunday 11th September starting at 2pm sharp in GAA grounds Farranfore. 

It is planned to be a outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun.
It is a great introduction to athletics sport if anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate.
Admission €3 or €10 for Family

Weekly Club Notes

The National Community Games Finals, Weekend 2 was held in Athlone IT last weekend. Kerry county did very well with many boys and girls making it to there relevant finals and standing on the podium. 
Leanne Cronin won Bronze in the U16 Discus, Leah Foley won Gold in the U12 Ball Throw, Cian Spillane won gold in the U12 600m and Liath Lenihan made it to the finals of the U14 Hurdles. Malachy Kirwan competed in the U12 100m Sprint distance Full results can be found on the Community Games website.






The National Masters Track & Field Championships were held in Tullamore on Sunday 21st August. 
Jim O'Shea competing in the O70 category continues to dominate winning High Jump & Long Jump and second in the 100m sprint. John Coleman competing in the O40 category was placed first in the Hammer. Jerome Foley competing in the O50 category 800m and 400m. No podium positions this time. Michael O'Connor competed in the O65 5Km Race Walk where he finished first.

Competing as members of the BorgWarner Tralee relay teams who competed in the Hardman Iron Distance Triathlon National Championships in Killarney on Saturday 20th August was George & Maria McCarthy. In what was horrendous weather conditions, Maria completed the 180Km Ring of Kerry cycle leg in a time of 6hrs 45mins & George did the marathon leg which was three laps of the Killarney National Park in a time of 2:46:52. Timothy Horgan completed the whole event (3.8Km swim, 180Km cycle & 42.2Km Run) and is now the National Triathlon long distance Champion in his age category. A great achievement.

Well done to all our athletes who competed in the Rose Of Tralee 10Km.

OPEN SPORTS DAY
The club will be hosting their annual Open Sports Day on Sunday 11th September at the GAA grounds in Farranfore. Starting at 2pm, It is planned to be a outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun. It is a great introduction to athletics sport if anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate. See our website for list of events. Admission: 3eu and 10eu for family

Club Social Outing
The club has organised a guided walk for all club members of the Muckross Peninsula in Killarney for Saturday 3rd September. It is a great opportunity for members to get to know each other. Meet at entrance to Muckross Traditional Farm for 11am. Track & Trail walk which is 6/7Km low level,suitable for everyone of 8yrs and over. Duration 1.5/2 hrs. Wear comfortable footwear (trainers) and rain jacket. Bring a packed lunch for after the walk.

Club Notes - August 8th-14th 2016

National Community Games, weekend 1
All eyes were on the National Community Games Finals, Weekend 1, held in Athlone IT last weekend. We had three juvenile athletes from our club competing in the Cross Country events.
Shauna McCarthy and Conall O'Mahony competed in the U13 mixed 1200m race. They both ran very well. Shauna had a fantastic run finishing in 5th place in the girls category and the first home for Kerry. Conall was not far behind and the second Kerry boy to finish. Unfortunately Kerry team were just out of luck and didn't place but all the young athletes ran their best and should be proud.
Cian Spillane was part of the U12 Boys Relay team. Cian played a major role in his leg of the race and securing Gold for Kerry. This was a fantastic achievement, there second year to win gold for Kerry. Well done to all the juvenile athletes who competed over the weekend. Next weekend the National Community Games athletics finals will be held. The very best of luck to all.

Well done to Jane English who competed in the Clonmel Half Marathon on August 14th. The finished in a time of 1hr 43mins, which is a new personal best performance for Jane. Well done.

Wear comfortable footwear (trainers) and rain jacket. Bring a packed lunch for after the walk.

Club Notes Aug. 2016

The GloHealth National League Final took place on Sunday 7th August in Tullamore. 
The Kerry ladies team was in action competing in Division 1. Coming into the final they had highest points, but in the final they were down a number of athletes due to other competitions held over the same weekend. The team just missed out on 3rd place by an absolute whisker. Although scoring 87 points, the same number as Donore Harriers AC, they were beaten into 4th place on the count back. In the league final we had Niamh De Hora who won the 1500m earning the team 9 points (4:48.87) and was part of the 4x400m relay team earning 3 points. Elaina Norris picked up 2 points in the Javelin with a throw of 11.81m. Well done to all who took part over the three rounds.

Shane Hand played a part for the men's An Riocht team earning them 6 points in the Hammer (42.16m) and Michael O'Connor competed in the 3000m race walk also earning the team 6 points with a time of 17:49. The An Riocht team finished in 7th place overall with 71 points.
