Patrick Kearney (Club Award) is a fine young athlete who has been competing with the club for a number of years. In 2016, he has made fantastic progress, due to the inspiring coaching from Rossa Foley and sheer hard work. At the County Track & Field Championships he won gold in U13 Shot and silver in the Javelin while finishing with a bronze in the Discus.

Siofra Foley (Club Award) is a long-time member of our club. In recent years she was participating mainly in sprints and hurdles. In 2016 she focused more on the field events, this proved to be a successful transition when she won three individual medals in the County Track & Field Championships. These were the Hurdles, Hammer & Discus. Competing in the National Juvenile “B” U15, Siofra won silver in the Shot. Her dedication to training over the last year has really paid off, long may it continue.

Cian Spillane (Juvenile Cross Country Award) had a very successful year on both track and Cross Country. He is coming through to be a very talented middle distance athlete securing gold in County U13 and U14 Cross Country Championships in Firies and Killarney. His strength showed on a very testing heavy course in Limerick race course in the Munster U13 Championships where he ran very strong to win the race. Cian has gone from strength to strength and finished off the season in style to take bronze in the National U13 Cross Country championships in Dundalk in a very closely fought battle. Cian is a very dedicated athlete and committed to his training which transfers to his success.

David Kenny (Junior Cross Country Award) better known for his dominance in the Race Walking competitions, proved that he is a talented all round athlete when winning the County U18 Cross Country Championship held close to home in Firies. This was followed with second place finish in the U19 category. David has won numerous Race Walking events in County & Munster level. In 2016 he was second in the National U18 Race Walk. David is a dedicated athlete and is very committed to his training which transfers to his success.

Maria McCarthy (Master XC Award) who was unable to compete competitively for the early part of 2016 due to injury, proved that the road to recovery is possible with proper sports injury management and rehabilitation. Maria is at home in cross country racing. Her season started off with a comfortable win in the county masters XC in Firies with second place finish in the county senior’s. She represented Ireland in the International Masters Cross Country Championships in Scotland where she and her team won bronze. Maria also won the Munster Masters.

Shauna upped the pace coming down from the hill and fought very hard continuously overtaking until she crossed the line in 4th place overall. A great performance from a talented and hard working athlete.
In the Women's Masters 4000m race we had six athletes competing. Maria McCarthy, from the start was in the top ten group. As the race progressed Maria fought hard finishing in fifth place overall and third in her age category. The club is really proud of you all.

The Munster Star Awards Banquet took place on Saturday 11th February in the Clonmel Park Hotel, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. Congratulations to our club chairman, Jerome Crowley, who was awarded the Hall Of Fame Patsy O’Connor Officer Award. Jerome Crowley commenced his athletics career in the mid 1950’s when he competed very successfully as a juvenile. He was unbeatable in the 100-yard sprint U/12 and U/14. He attended Tralee C.B.S. and in 1962, with colleagues Ted Fitzgerald, Henry Kenney and Brian O’Neill won the Munster Schools 4 x 100-yard relay. They went on to win bronze medals at the All-Ireland Schools. s. Jerome was part of the Club team who won the coveted Quill Cup for the first time in 1962. He was and still is very dedicated to his sport and proof of this was his attendance at what was then the Annual Summer School of Athletics. This was the first real attempt at athletics coaching. Like his late father, John, he has given sterling service to Farranfore Maine Valley Athletics Club and to Kerry County Athletics Board.
