Club Weekly Notes May 2017

Below are this week's notes. Thank you for your continued support

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
The Munster Schools Track & Field Championships 2017 was held in Cork Institute of Technology on Saturday May 20th. Leanne Cronin, representing Killorglin Community College was second in the Intermediate Hammer throw. She threw a new personal best throw of 34.93m.

We will be hosting our Annual Juvenile Open Sports Day on Sunday 28th May starting at 2pm sharp in the GAA Grounds Farranfore village. It is planned to be an outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun. It is a great introduction to athletics sports if  anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate. All races will be on grass. Field events will be out doors, weather permitting. If not we will hold some field events indoors in the sports hall. Events catered for ages U6 to U16 with novelty events for the younger ages. Check out our website for full list of events
Admission €3 each or €10 per family.

On Wednesday 31st May our District Primary School Sports will be held in Keel GAA Grounds starting at 6:15pm. Events for all classes with a fun run for the junior & senior infants. Details of events can be seen on our website and each school will receive programme of events.

Munster U/9 to U/13 T&F Championships - Closing date is midnight on Friday 26th May. Munster U/14 to U/19 T&F Championships - Closing date is midnight on Wednesday 7th June


Club Training:
Juvenile Training: Outdoors on Tuesday's at 6pm in the Sports Hall, Farranfore. €2 per session.  New members welcome.

Secondary School /Junior / Senior training every Thursday at 6:40pm in GAA Grounds Farranfore. This is endurance training for all levels with emphasis on running form and technique. €2 club member, €4 non club member.

Annual District Primary School Sports - May 31st 2017

Annual District Primary School Sports - May 31st

Farranfore Maine Valley AC will host the Annual District Primary Sports for the local schools on Wednesday 31st May 2017 in Keel GAA Grounds starting at 6:15pm. All primary school children within the Farranfore district are eligible to compete.

Come along and enjoy a great evening of sports and fun for our children.

Programme of Events
(Separate races for boys and girls)
1st Class: 60m, 100m
2nd Class: 60m, 100m, 4x100 relay
3rd Class: 80m, 200m, Turbo Javelin
4th Class: 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay
5th Class: 100m, 600m, Long Jump
6th Class: 100m, 600m, Shot, 4x100 relay


Children in 1st, 3rd and 5th class may move up a class to compete in each 4th, 5th and 6th class 4x100 relays respectively.
2nd class may move up to 3rd class Turbo Javelin.
4th class may move up to 5th class Long Jump.
Shot is confined to 6th class children only.
Children can enter all events in their category mentioned above. Medals for the first 3 finishers of each event.

We will also have fun races for boys and girls in Junior and Senior Infants (40m run)

For details please speak to your school principal.
Children who get placed in these events will go forward to represent the district in the County Primary School Sports Day

Juvenile Open Sports Day - May 28th 2017

Juvenile Athletics Sports Day on Sunday 28th May starting at 2pm sharp in GAA Grounds Farranfore. 

It is planned to be a outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun.
It is a great introduction to athletics sport if anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate.
Admission €3 or €10 for Family

U6:     50m
U8:     50m
U9:     60m, 100m, Turbo Jav
U10:   60m, 100m, Long Jump, Relay 
U11:   80m, 300m, Turbo Jav
U12:   80m, 600m, Long Jump, Shot, Relay 
U14:   100m, 800m, High Jump, Mixed Relay  (2 Boys & 2 Girls)
U16:   100m, 800m, Shot, Mixed Relay  (2 Boys & 2 Girls)

Novelty Events for the younger ages.

Club Weekly Notes May 2017

The first 2017 Community Games National Finals took place on Saturday May 6th in the National Sports Campus Abbotstown, Dublin. Kerry had 194 participants from 30 areas, participating in various events. The main focus for club athletes were the U17 7Km Marathon, U13 Cross Country and U12 / U14 mixed distance relays. Cian Spillane (Milltown / Listry) had an outstanding performance when he won individual gold in the U13 cross country race. With his first place position and some fine running by Conal O' Mahony (Firies) who finished in 6th place overall they earned themselves a team bronze. Malachy Kirwan (Dingle) was part of the U14 mixed distance Relay, they made it to the finals but unfortunately missed out on podium. Natasha Myers (Keel / Kiltallagh) was part of the Kerry Marathon team. Natasha was the first girl home for Kerry and the team finished in fifth place overall. Ellen Kelliher (Keel / Kiltallagh) was part of the U12 mixed distance relay. They made it through the heats and in the finals they just missed out finishing in fifth place. A special mention also to brothers TJ & Christopher Palmer (Firies) who both won individual gold in there relevant weight U16 Judo competition. Well done to you all.

In the South Munster Schools Track & Field Championships held on May 4th, Leanne Cronin (Killorglin CC) was 2nd in the Discus (22.71m) and 3rd in the Intermediate Shot Putt with a throw of 8.66m.

Club Weekly Notes April 2017

The Kerry Junior, Senior and Master Track and Field Championships were held on Friday 14th April. Kayleigh Cronin won the Senior discus with a fine throw of 48m. Rossa Foley took gold in the Senior  triple jump and javelin. Arthur Fitzgerald was second in the Senior 3000m. The Masters results will follow next week

The Annual Boherbue to Kiskeam 4 mile road race organised by Gneeveguilla AC was held on Monday 17th April. This race always attracts some of Munsters finest athletes and this year was no exception, with the top three finishers breaking twenty minutes for the 4 mile distance. From our club, Dermot Dineen ran well to finish fifteenth overall and 2nd in his category with a finishing time of 23:31. Aidan McCarthy was just behind in a time of 23:42. Natasha Myers was second in the U17 category 31:42.

The Munster Junior & U23 Track & Field Championships was held in Waterford on Sunday 23rd April. Kayleigh Cronin won the U23 Discus with a throw of 45.67m. Rossa Foley came home with an impressive 4 medal haul. He was first in the U23 Triple Jump 11.64m, 1st in the Javelin 38.47m, 3rd in the Shot 8.98m, 3rd in the 35Lb Weight 7.12m and 4th in the Discus 27.61m. Leanne Cronin was 2nd in the Discus 24.83m, 3rd in the Hammer 26.53m, 4th in the 4Kg Shot 7.36m,  

Athletics Ireland are delighted to announce details and open registration for the forthcoming Sprints / Jumps / Hurdles Network day which will be held in Athlone IT on Sunday April 30th. The day will feature keynote presentations and workshops from leading international coaches - Michael Afilaka, Brendan Reilly and Alan Kennedy. Presentations on long-term athlete development (LTSAD), in-season and pre-season planning and components of the sport will be offered alongside practical workshops on sprints, hurdles, long jump, high jump and triple jump. Registration is now open on Athletics Ireland website.

Club Weekly Notes April 2017

The Kingdom Come 10 miler & 5K, hosted by An Riocht Athletics Club was held in Castleisland on Sunday April 9th. In the 10 mile race, George McCarthy was 8th overall and first in his age category. Deirdre Nagle was second lady and Ger Ladden did very well to win his category. Aidan McCarthy was second in the 5K race with Dermot Dineen finishing in fourth place & Natasha Myers finishing second in the U16 category. Well done to all.

The Club awards celebration and recognition night was held in Sherwoods Bar & Restaurant, Farranfore on Friday 7th April. The following members picked up an award for their outstanding achievements in 2015 & 2016. Killian Kerins, Elaina Norris and Leanne Cronin were awarded perpetual trophy for Juveniles.
David Kenny received the Dr. Eamonn O'Sullivan Cup for his achievements in Race Walking. Rossa Foley received the George Walsh trophy for his achievements in throws competition. Sean O'Shea was awarded the New York Trophy for his achievements in Masters Field events. Maria McCarthy received the Breda Brosnan Cup for her achievements in Cross Country Masters. Jerome Foley received the Fitzgerald Cup in Track & Field. Tom Walsh received the Hall Of Fame and was awarded the Nelligan Cup.  The following received special awards. Ladies & Men's Cross Country Teams, Maria McCarthy for winning silver in the World Masters 5000m track race, Michael O'Connor for competing in the European Masters Race Walk, Emma Prendiville for winning individual in the National Race Walk competition and Kayleigh Cronin in winning individual in the National Throws Championships. A special thanks to our club Chairman Jerome Crowley for organizing the whole event.

The Junior, Senior & Masters County Track & Field Championships were held on Friday 14th April. We hope to have full results for next week.

Club Weekly Notes March 2017

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
Day 3 of the National Juvenile Indoor Track & Field Championships were held in AIT Arena, Athlone on Saturday 1st April. Cian Spillane was competing in the U14 800m distance. Following on from his impressive win in the Munsters, Cian had a very gutsy run to win National Gold in a time of 2:16.93. Fantastic achievement.

The Munster Novice, Senior & Masters Road Race Championships were held in Currow under glorious sunshine on Sunday 2nd April. There was a great turnout from Kerry athletes. Results will be posted in Munster Athletics website.

Club Weekly Notes March 2017

The Kerry County Road Race Championships was held in Beaufort on a warm and sunny Sunday March 26th. Hosted by Star Of The Laune AC there was a large turnout for the 5K race.  Tim O'Connor & Shona Heaslip (An Riocht AC) were the overall senior winners. There was six athletes competing from our club and they took home 5 individual medals. Killian Kearins was second in the Junior category. Aidan McCarthy was first in masters O35, George McCarthy was first in O40 category, Mary O'Shea was second in O40 ladies and Bernie O'Mahony was also second in her O45 category. Brendan Lynch also competed and ran a gutsy race. Full results will be posted on Kerry Athletics website.

On Sunday next, 2nd April, Kerry are hosting the Munster 4 Mile Novice, Senior & Masters Road Championships in Currow.

Club Weekly Notes March 2017

Cathal Kirwan competed in the Cyprus Half Marathon. He had a great race completing the 21Km distance in a time of 1:27:51 which is a new personal best. He was placed 6th in his age category.

Tralee was the place to be over the weekend where Tralee Harriers AC Hosted a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Full Marathon. A new member to our club, Deirdre Nagle was the first lady to finish the Half Marathon in a time of 1:28.09. Marie Mckenna was third lady in the 5K with a time of 21:42

Well done to all our juvenile club members who competed in the County Community Games Cross Country races held in Beaufort on Sunday 19th March.
Representing there townlands the following medalled and won their spot to represent Kerry in the Nationals in May. Ellen Kelliher, Eabha McCarthy, Shauna McCarthy, Diarmuid Kirwan, Cian Spillane & Conal O'Mahony.

On Sunday next, 26th March, Star of the Laune AC are hosting the County 5km Road Championships in Beaufort.  We hope to have senior / masters men and women's teams, and there is also an individual novice section. Hopefully we will get a big turnout as it is a good course to get a new PB!

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
The Kerry Athletics Juvenile Development Indoor Sports Hall Games took place on Saturday 11th March in The Nagle Rice Community Centre, Milltown.
With almost 250 juvenile athletes competing between the years of 8 to 11 from the majority of Kerry's athletic clubs. It was a very enjoyable day with the main focus on introducing young kids to the sport of athletics. A special thanks to The Nagle Rice Community Centre, it's management and staff for the use of their venue and it was organised by Tralee Harriers AC. Well done to all of the athletes who took part and and gave it their all. Rachel Boyle was first in the U9 Sprint with Grainne Costello taking third in the U11 Speed Bounce. Diarmuid Kirwan travelling all the ways from Dingle did not disappoint when he finished in second place for the sprint. Amy Kelliher and Caoimhe Spring also did very well in all their events.
A new transfer to our club, Julie Deane competed in the famous Ballycotton 10miler held on Sunday March 12th. Julie complete the 10 miles in 1hr 31 mins. Well done.
Frank Lynch, Munster Performance Walks Coach will be holding an additional session for Development and Performance Walkers on Saturday next, 18th March in Nenagh Indoor Stadium from 10am to noon. All interested Walkers are welcome to attend, cost for the session is 5 euro per athlete.
