Weekly Club Notes

The National Community Games Finals, Weekend 2 was held in Athlone IT last weekend. Kerry county did very well with many boys and girls making it to there relevant finals and standing on the podium. 
Leanne Cronin won Bronze in the U16 Discus, Leah Foley won Gold in the U12 Ball Throw, Cian Spillane won gold in the U12 600m and Liath Lenihan made it to the finals of the U14 Hurdles. Malachy Kirwan competed in the U12 100m Sprint distance Full results can be found on the Community Games website.






The National Masters Track & Field Championships were held in Tullamore on Sunday 21st August. 
Jim O'Shea competing in the O70 category continues to dominate winning High Jump & Long Jump and second in the 100m sprint. John Coleman competing in the O40 category was placed first in the Hammer. Jerome Foley competing in the O50 category 800m and 400m. No podium positions this time. Michael O'Connor competed in the O65 5Km Race Walk where he finished first.

Competing as members of the BorgWarner Tralee relay teams who competed in the Hardman Iron Distance Triathlon National Championships in Killarney on Saturday 20th August was George & Maria McCarthy. In what was horrendous weather conditions, Maria completed the 180Km Ring of Kerry cycle leg in a time of 6hrs 45mins & George did the marathon leg which was three laps of the Killarney National Park in a time of 2:46:52. Timothy Horgan completed the whole event (3.8Km swim, 180Km cycle & 42.2Km Run) and is now the National Triathlon long distance Champion in his age category. A great achievement.

Well done to all our athletes who competed in the Rose Of Tralee 10Km.

OPEN SPORTS DAY
The club will be hosting their annual Open Sports Day on Sunday 11th September at the GAA grounds in Farranfore. Starting at 2pm, It is planned to be a outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun. It is a great introduction to athletics sport if anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate. See our website for list of events. Admission: 3eu and 10eu for family

Club Social Outing
The club has organised a guided walk for all club members of the Muckross Peninsula in Killarney for Saturday 3rd September. It is a great opportunity for members to get to know each other. Meet at entrance to Muckross Traditional Farm for 11am. Track & Trail walk which is 6/7Km low level,suitable for everyone of 8yrs and over. Duration 1.5/2 hrs. Wear comfortable footwear (trainers) and rain jacket. Bring a packed lunch for after the walk.

Club Training:
Juvenile Training will start up on Tuesday 6th September in Farranfore GAA grounds starting at 6pm. This will be in preparation for the Cross Country Championships which will kick of first week in October. Open to children aged 7yrs  and upwards. €2 per session

Pole Vault & Triple Jump Coaching Weekend, Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th September from 10am to 5pm in Templemore Track. Refer to Munster Athletics website for full details.

Juvenile Open Sports Day - 11th Sept.


Juvenile Athletics Sports Day on Sunday 11th September starting at 2pm sharp in GAA grounds Farranfore. 

It is planned to be a outing for the whole family with the main emphasis on fun.
It is a great introduction to athletics sport if anyone is interested in their children taking part in athletics. You do not need to be a member of an athletics club to participate.
Admission €3 or €10 for Family

U8:     50m
U9:     60m, 100m, Turbo Jav
U10:   60m, 100m, Long Jump
U11:   80m, 300m, Turbo Jav
U12:   80m, 600m, Long Jump, Shot, Relay (Team of 3 in 600m)
U14:   100m, 800m, High Jump, Mixed Relay  (Team of 3 in 800m)
U16:   100m, 800m, Shot, Mixed Relay  (Team of 3 in 800m)Novelty Events for the younger ages.

Club Notes - August 8th-14th 2016

National Community Games, weekend 1
All eyes were on the National Community Games Finals, Weekend 1, held in Athlone IT last weekend. We had three juvenile athletes from our club competing in the Cross Country events.
Shauna McCarthy and Conall O'Mahony competed in the U13 mixed 1200m race. They both ran very well. Shauna had a fantastic run finishing in 5th place in the girls category and the first home for Kerry. Conall was not far behind and the second Kerry boy to finish. Unfortunately Kerry team were just out of luck and didn't place but all the young athletes ran their best and should be proud.
Cian Spillane was part of the U12 Boys Relay team. Cian played a major role in his leg of the race and securing Gold for Kerry. This was a fantastic achievement, there second year to win gold for Kerry. Well done to all the juvenile athletes who competed over the weekend. Next weekend the National Community Games athletics finals will be held. The very best of luck to all.

Well done to Jane English who competed in the Clonmel Half Marathon on August 14th. The finished in a time of 1hr 43mins, which is a new personal best performance for Jane. Well done.

Club Notes Aug. 2016

The GloHealth National League Final took place on Sunday 7th August in Tullamore. 
The Kerry ladies team was in action competing in Division 1. Coming into the final they had highest points, but in the final they were down a number of athletes due to other competitions held over the same weekend. The team just missed out on 3rd place by an absolute whisker. Although scoring 87 points, the same number as Donore Harriers AC, they were beaten into 4th place on the count back. In the league final we had Niamh De Hora who won the 1500m earning the team 9 points (4:48.87) and was part of the 4x400m relay team earning 3 points. Elaina Norris picked up 2 points in the Javelin with a throw of 11.81m. Well done to all who took part over the three rounds.

Shane Hand played a part for the men's An Riocht team earning them 6 points in the Hammer (42.16m) and Michael O'Connor competed in the 3000m race walk also earning the team 6 points with a time of 17:49. The An Riocht team finished in 7th place overall with 71 points.

Club Notes for 23rd - 31st July 2016

The final two days of the GloHealth National Juvenile Track and Field Championships was held in Tullamore over 23rd & 24th July. David Kenney produced a great performance to finish second in the U18 5KM Race Walk. David completed the distance in a time of 25:55.36. Elaina Norris finished 5th in the U18 Discus with a throw of 22.82m. Leanne Cronin finished 7th in the U17 Hammer with a throw of 31.48m which is a personal best throw.

The Munster Juvenile 'B' Track & Field Championships were held in Waterford on Saturday 30th July. Siofra Foley continues to perform well when she took silver in the U15 Shot with a throw of 7.05m. Liath Lenihan won bronze in the U14 High Jump with a height of 1.25m. Liath will be competing for Kerry in the Community Games Finals in a few weeks. We wish he all the best.

The Munster Senior / Masters Track & Field Championships were held in Waterford on Sunday 31st July. Rossa Foley competing in the Senior events did very well. Rossa took Gold in the Discus with a throw of 28.61m, bronze in the Triple Jump with a leap of 11.99m, Bronze in the Shot with a throw of 8.49m & sixth in the Javelin. 
In the Masters, Jim O'Shea continues to dominate his O70 category with 1st in the High Jump (1.25m), 1st in the Long Jump (3.91m) and 2nd in the 100m sprint (15.66sec)
John Coleman competing in the O40 category was 2nd in the Hammer (31.14m). Jerome Foley competing in the O50 category took silver in the 400m (1:02.12) and 2nd in the 800m (2:23.31).

The Gleneagle Killarney Half Marathon was held on Saturday 23rd July. Dermot Dineen completed the distance in a personal best time of 1hr 22mins. Well done.

The Annual Banna 10K & 5K Fun Run, hosted by St.Brendans AC was held on Sunday 31st July. Over 300 competed. A good number from our club competed in the event. Dermot Dineen was first to finish in a time of 38:41. Garvin Cronin (40:41), Bernie O'Mahony (51:13), Pauline Joseph (57:09). Well done to you all.

National League Track & Field Championships Round 2

Round two of the National League Track & Field Championships took place on Sunday 17th July in Cork. The Kerry Ladies team were in action in Division 1.The team which is made up of athletes from numerous clubs earned a total of 112 points adding to their 116 from the first round. This puts them in a great position going into finals which will be held in August. we had four from our club representing Kerry. 
Emma Prendiville in the 1500m Race Walk was 1st in a time of 5:51.21. 
Niamh de Hora in the 1500m distance finished 2nd in a time of 4:51.62. 
Leanne Cronin in the Discus finished in 2nd place with a throw of 25.36m and 
Elaina Norris in the Shot Putt finished in 4th place with a throw of 6.75m. 
We wish the Kerry ladies Team all the best in the finals on August 7th.

Munster T&F Events

Munster Juvenile "B" T&F Championships, Saturday 30th July in Waterford RSC.

Munster Senior & Masters T&F Championships, Sunday 31st July 2016 in Waterford RSC.
It was an action packed weekend with the GloHealth National Juvenile B Championships on Saturday 9th and on Sunday 10th we had the GloHealth National Juvenile Track & Field Championships Day 1, both held in Tullamore.

Siofra Foley, competing in the Juvenile B U15 Shot did very well to win silver with a fine throw of 7.24m. Siofra's continued training over the last year has really paid off, long may it continue. 

On Sunday Cian Spillane competed in the U13 600m, Cian ran a superb race but the race was very fast from the start. Likewise with Leanne Cronin who competed in the shot.

National Junior and U23 Track & Field Championships 2016

The GloHealth National Junior and U23 Track and Field Championships were held in Tullamore on July 2nd. There were a number of fine performances despite adverse weather conditions where some athletes were looking to seal selection for the European Youth Championships and World Junior Athletics Championships with national medals up for grabs.

 Kayleigh Cronin impressed in the Throws when she won the U23 Discus with a throw of 41.31m.

National Senior Track & Field Championships 2016

The National Senior Track & Field Championships were held over last weekend at Athlone AIT Arena. There were some great performances from Ireland's top athletes. 
We were represented from our club by Emma Prendiville and Kayleigh Cronin
Emma competed in the 5000m Race Walk where she had an outstanding race to win National gold medal in a time of 25:15.57. 
Kayleigh competed in the Discus where she finished in second place earning herself a National silver medal with a throw of 44.76m. 
Well done to you both, a great achievement where the club is very proud of you.
