Club Weekly Notes December 2017

Race Walking Championships
The Irish Life Health National Race Walking Championships were held in St. Annes Park Raheny, Dublin on Saturday December 9th. The competitors braved the cold weather as they walked up and down the picturesque tree-lined main avenue in St Anne’s Park.
David Kenny was first in the Junior 10K race walk. David was very impressive to complete the distance in 49mins 3 sec. His mentor & coach, Michael O'Connor competed in the masters 5K race walk. Michael also did very well to win the over 65 category. Well done to you both.

Further afield in Cyprus, Cathal Kirwan took part in the Paphos 10K. Cathal did very well to secure podium position when he was placed in third place of his age category. Great to see images of our club singlet in Cyprus.

Munster Juvenile B & Intermediate XC Championships 2017

Below are this week's notes. Thank you for your continued support.

Munster Cross Country
The final Munster Cross Country Championship fixture of the season was held in the scenic village of Beaufort on Sunday Dec. 3rd. for the Juvenile 'B' and Intermediates. The day was overcast with intervals of heavy mist. The course was flat and fast with some few patches of surface mud.

Congratulations to all our Juvenile Athletes who participated, it was fantastic to see such a strong turnout from the club. We would have had more only some were victim to illness which is rampant at the moment. We wish them all a quick recovery.

First off was the Girls U9 750m. Rachel Boyle, competing at Munster level for the first time had a good run to be part of the Kerry Team to win team Bronze. Isaac Vickers had a very impressive run to win the U9 Boys race and securing Bronze for Kerry Team.
We had three girls competing in the U11 1000m, 2 lap race. First Home was Mairead Walsh, followed closely behing by Rhian McCarthy and Grainne Costello. Mairead & Rhian made the Kerry County team to secure bronze with Grainne as sub.
Tiernan Lynch did very well in the U11 boys race been part of the Kerry county team to win Gold. Cormac Costello represented our club in the U13 1500m distance and ran well.
Natasha Myers competed in the U15 Girls 2500m race. It was great to see Natasha competing at this level again.
Conall O'Mahony had a great race in U15 Boys. Running with great form and technique, always in control. Conall finished in 4th place to get individual medal and was also part of the Kerry County team who won Gold.
In the Munster Intermediate Women's 5000m race we had six competing. Mary Daly battled hard throughout the race and at one stage was fighting for third position. Unfortunately Mary was unable to hold the fast pace and eventually did exceptionally well to finish in fifth place overall. Mary led the club team to secure silver team and was first finisher for Kerry to secure bronze for county. Caitriona Barry did equally well to be placed 10th with Marie McKenna was behind in 11th. Mary O'Shea was 19th, Grainne Tierney 21st and Pauline Joseph in 26th. Caitriona & Marie were also part of the Kerry team. Fantastic achievement

In the Intermediate Men's 8000m race we had a club team. As in most Men's races the pace from the start was very fast with everyone pushing to find a strong position. George McCarthy had a good start and fought well throughout the race to finish first for the club in 10th place. Not far behind was Arthur Fitzgerald in 17th place, Dermot Dineen in 19th and Brendan Lynch in 33rd place. The club secured team bronze and George was part of the Kerry County team who won gold.
It is a rare occasion to see our club pick up club team medals in both the Men and Women's races. A credit to their dedication in training and to our coach Maria McCarthy. We would also like to give praise to our Club Secretary, Mary Kennedy, who works tirelessly in the background arranging all our entries to the competitions. Full results can be found in Munster Athletics Website.

St. STEPHENS 5K - Tuesday Dec 26th 2017

Farranfore Maine Valley A.C.
5KM Road Race / Fun Run

Tuesday 26th December 2017 @ 12 noon

One of the oldest road races in Ireland takes place every St. Stephen's day. It has been run since 1961 along the same route.
Now in its 56th year, is run from Farranfore to Firies and back to the finish in Farranfore.

In 2013 the distance was changed from the traditional 4.16miles (6.7KM) to 3.1miles (5KM). This was to make the route safer for all runners and spectators by closing the road to traffic. It proved to be a great success so we have decided to keep with this for all future races.

We will keep the traditional route of starting at the Kerry Mill in Farranfore, running close to the cross-roads in Firies and returning via the same route. So it will be in keeping with the traditional OUT AND BACK course. You can enjoy the day without having to worry about any traffic concerns.

National Senior and Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships 2017

Hi,
Below are this week's notes. Thank you for your continued support.

The Irish Life Health National Senior and Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships was held at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus on Sunday 26th November. It was an action packed, cold, dry and muddy day which kicked off with the Juveniles even age races.

First up from our club was Shauna McCarthy representing the Munster province in the U14 3000m's. It was made up of two laps of the course which took them through some nice fast terrain initially, but this was short lived as they entered the second field which contained undulating hilly section with wet and heavy mud section to negotiate. With 160 athletes competing it was a race to get a good start and fight for your position. Shauna did very well with getting a good start and fought her way through the mass of athletes to finish is a well deserved fourteenth place overall. She was third Munster team finisher and with there combined totals the Munster Province won team gold.

Cian Spillane was our only other juvenile athlete competing. Also in the U14 boys 3000m distance and also representing the Munster Province team. Cian did not manage to get a good starting position in the 158 athletes pack. He had to work hard throughout the race to claw back some positions. Cian eventually finished in forty ninth place overall. Well done to you both. You have had an exceptional cross country season and the whole of the club is very proud of you both.

Maria McCarthy lined up for the National Senior Ladies race, competing with the county team. They had 8000m to complete, which was four laps of the course. It was a fast race from the onset with some of the top athletes in Ireland competing for a place in the European team. Maria finished in twenty seventh place, third Kerry lady home. With the four person team they managed to win bronze for the County team. A great achievement. We would also like to congratulate Shona Heaslip of An Riocht AC who retained her title as National Women's Champion for the second year and has booked her place in the Irish team for the Europeans XC.
In the Senior Men's 10000m we had George McCarthy competing. Again a great turnout with close to 170 athletes competing. George ran a very strong race throughout the five lap course, which was by now well and truly cut up. He was the first home from Kerry out of three runners.

Closer to home, the annual Puck Warriors Christmas 5K & 10K road race was held on Saturday. Congratulations to Marie McKenna who won the 5K and Dermot Dineen finishing fourth in the 10K race.

Munster Master's Cross Country Championships

Another successful outing by our club athletes who were competing in the Munster Master's Cross Country Championships on Sunday 19th November. Held in Riverstick Co. Cork on what was a dry and mild day. Thanks to Cork Athletics for providing a great cross country course with a mixture of long rolling hills, steep down hills and meandering heavy and muddy obstacles. Our athletes picked up two individual medals and three team positions.

First up was the Master Women's 4000m race. There was a great turn out with just under seventy competitors. Maria McCarthy ran very well running against some top irish athletes to finish in third place overall, 2nd in her age category and first home for Kerry. Mary Daly had a great race, working very hard for the team in gaining two valuable positions in a sprint finish to come in ninth place overall and fourth in her category. Caitriona Barry ran her hearth out to come seventeenth place and 5th in her category. Marie McKenna was 33rd and 11th in her age category. Grainne Tierney continues to improve with every race and was a valuable member of the clubs team. Our womens O35 team came in second place and they also made up the county team who also came second.

In The Master Mens 7000m race we had three athletes competing with over 100 other athletes from all over munster.. George McCarthy got off to a great start mixing with the lead group for alot of the race. George finished very well to come in 14th overall and third in his age category. George was third home for Kerry and part of the county team to win silver. Dermot Dineen ran very well through this testing course to finish in 26th place overall and 12th in his age category. Brendan Lynch who is relatively new to competing at this level ran extremely well and continues to improve as he finished in the top twenty of his age category. It was great to see a large turnout from Kerry clubs in the mens race with thirteen competing.

On Sunday 26th November is the first National Cross Country Championships for this season. We have Cian Spillane & Shauna McCarthy competing for Munster in the U14 Juvenile races. We also have some of our adults competing in the senior races, who will be part of the County teams. Best of luck to all competing.

Munster Senior & Juvenile Uneven Ages XC

The Munster Senior & Juvenile Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships was held in Galbally, Co. Limerick on Sunday 12th November. Following a very wet Friday and Saturday thankfully the sun shined throughout the competition. The course was relatively flat with plenty of stick mud following the heavy rain over the last week.

Jessie Lynch was our youngest competitor today as she competed in her very first Munster Championships. Taking on the U9 750m with well over one hundred competitors. Following a slow start, Jessie began to advance through the field of young athletes and eventually found herself in the top ten group of runners. Jessie fought hard and finished in fifth place earning herself an individual medal.
Next up was Shauna McCarthy who was competing out of age in the U15 3500m race. Again a large field of athletes in this race. Shauna ran extremely well negotiating the heavy muddy conditions very well and remained in the top 12 throughout the first 1500m lap. As other athletes began to find the course challenging, Shauna looked very strong as she continued to advance her position and eventually finished in third place overall. A great achievement.

In the Munster Senior Women's 8000m, 4 lap race we had four athletes competing. Maria McCarthy settled into third position from the gun and ran very well putting a large gap between herself and the fourth runner. Maria held onto her third place position to finish on the podium. Next home for our club was Mary Daly, competing for the very first time at Munster level. Not far behind was Caitriona Barry and our fourth athlete was Grainne Tierney. With their combined points they won first place for club team. This is a great achievement and may well be the very first club gold team medal at senior level. Maria and Mary were also part of the Kerry County team to win silver, just a few points behind Cork team.
George McCarthy was our only male competitor today as he competed in the Senior Men's 10K, 5t lap race. George ran well.

Club Weekly Notes October 2017

Below are this week's notes. Thank you for your continued support.

The Munster Juvenile Even Ages Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday 22nd October in Clarecastle, Co. Clare. Following some very heavy rainfall on Saturday the course was very wet and muddy. Although great efforts were made by stewards to keep the course clear, there was no avoiding the mud.
We had four of our juvenile athletes competing. First up was Diarmuid Kirwan in the U12 2000m race. This was two small laps. Diarmuid did very well with almost 150 boys competing he finished in 65th place.
Shauna McCarthy U14 3000m was our only girl competing. The course was 1 small lap and one large lap. Shauna who won the county U14 & U15 XC races was in part of the main group after the first lap. Slowly the athletes began to spread out as the wet & muddy course began to take its toll. With 1000m to go, Shauna still looking very strong took the lead and began to inject some speed. No one else was able to follow and Shauna won the U14 race with plenty to spare.

Cian Spillane and Malachy Kirwan represented the club in the U14 boys race. From the start Cian was part of the lead group changing front positions throughout the course. With 400m to go the gold medal was between Cian and another. Cian made a break in the last 200m but was unable to shake his competition off. Cian had to settle for a well deserved second place. Malachy, who is most suited to the shorter distances, ran a very gutsy race and finished very strong 32nd. Congratulations to all four of you. Shauna and Cian will now go forward to represent Munster in the National Cross Country in November.

The Autumn Open International Cross Country was held on Sunday 22nd October at the National Sports Campus, Abbottstown. The event showcased Ireland’s talent from junior level right up to the masters along with a selection of international runners. The combined women's race of 6000m distance was also part of the Masters Irish Team selection for the British & Irish Masters Championships. Maria McCarthy, who has represented Ireland on two occasions ran very well to finish 6th place in the O40, with Marie McKenna 14th & Grainne Tierney 19th. Caitriona Barry was 9th & Bernie O'Mahony 13th in the O45.
In the men's 7,500m Dermot Dineen was 27th in the O35 & Jerome Foley 14th in O50. They both ran very well and enjoyed the experience competing with some of the best runners in Ireland.

Club Weekly Notes October 2017

On Sunday 15th October the Juvenile Even Age Relays,Senior & Junior Cross Country Championships were held in Killorglin, hosted by Star Of The Laune AC. Weather conditions were ideal in what was a testing course with undulating hills, soft sections and the odd down hill.

In the Juveniles first up was the U10 4x250m Relays. The team was made up of Rhian McCarthy, Jessie Lynch, Grainne Costello & Rachel Boyle. They all ran exceptionally well to win gold with a very comfortable lead.
The U10 Boys made up of Kevin O'Shea, Tyrnan Lynch, Isaac & Ryan Vickers had a good run to come in 2nd place taking silver.
U12 4x250m Girls race we had Doireann O'Shea, Niamh O'Shea, Meabh Dineen and Sadhbh Teahan. Most of these girls were out of age but ran an impressive race to finish outside the medals.
U14 4x500m Girls we had Shauna & Eabha McCarthy, Elaine McMahon & Ellen Kelliher. They were up against some very tough competition and finished outside the medals.
The U14 Boys did well to finish in 2nd place. The team was Cian Spillane, Malachy & Diarmuid Kirwan & Cormac Costello.
Our U16 3x500m Boys did very well to finish in a comfortable 1st place. Their was some very impressive running by Conall O Mahony, Michael Brosnan & Thomas Clifford. Great to see so many teams out representing our club on the day.

The Senior Women's 5000m race was 3 laps of the course. We had eight ladies competing. Maria McCarthy running strong from the start took second place position behind Shona Heaslip of An Riocht AC. Just behind Maria was Niamh De Hora in fourth place, Mary Daly 5th, Catriona Barry 6th and Marie McKenna 7th. Mary O'Shea 13th, Grainne Tierney 14th, Julie Dean 19th. Our club picked up two team medals Team a Gold and Team B bronze. An outstanding performance by everyone.
There was a big turnout for the Men's 10Km, 6 lap race. We had six competing. George McCarthy was first to finish in 5th place overall. Next was Dermot Dineen in 8th, Artur Fitzgerald 10th, Brendan Lynch 15th, Garvin Cronin 17th & Denis Riordan 18th. With some very gutsy running the six men took silver team.
This was a very successful county cross country championships for the club. We are not one of the largest clubs in the county, but we had a great turnout in both Juvenile and adult level. It was great to see so many teams in all age categories competing and doing so well. This would not have been possible only for the hard work of our chairman, Jerome Crowley, who works tirelessly all season in bringing everything together. A special thanks also to our head coach, Maria McCarthy and her assistants, Sean O'Shea and Eileen Myers.

We will now be focusing on the Munster events. The Munster Juvenile 'B' and Intermediate XC will be held in Beaufort on Sunday 3rd December. This will be our main focus over the next month and it is a great event for newcomers to get experience in competing at Munster level.
