Club Weekly Notes July/Aug 2017

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
The Munster Juvenile "B" T&F Championships Day took place in Templemore on Saturday 29th July.  Well done to Cormac Costello who won bronze in the U13 600m. He was also 5th in the Long Jump
His sister, Grainne competed in the U10 Long Jump finishing in 11th place and was 8th in the 500m. 
The three McCarthy sisters were also competing. Shauna was 7th in the U14 800m, Eabha was 5th in the U12 80m sprint and Rhian was also fifth in the U10 500m. Well done to you all.

The National League Round 2 was held in Templemore on Sunday July 30th. The Kerry Women's team did very well with a total of 111 points. This was enough to guarantee them a place in the final. This will be held on Sunday August 20th in Tullamore. 
Competing from our club was Maria McCarthy in the 1500m where she finished in 2nd place. Niamh De Hora in the 800m where she was first. Elaina Norris in the 100m Hurdles where she was third.
Rossa Foley was part of the Men's An Riocht team who also qualified for their finals. We wish them all the best of luck. Jerome Foley and Dermot Dineen guested in the 800m and 5000m respectively.

Well done to our club members who competed in the Gneeveguilla AC mile series. There was some great performances with Dermot Dineen, Aidan McCarthy & Jerome Foley breaking the 5mins for the mile in more than one occasion. Well done also the Marie McKenna  who did extremely well also in breaking the 6min for the mile.

St. Brendan's AC hosted their annual 5K & 10K Banna Road Race on Sunday 6th August. Maria McCarthy was first lady in the 10K and her daughter Shauna was third lady in the 5K distance. Also competing from our club was Aidan McCarthy & Dermot Dineen.

Club Weekly Notes July 2017

Day 2 of the Kerry County Juvenile Championships for U9 to U16 age groups took place on Saturday July 15th in An Riocht Athletics Track, Castleisland. The club was well represented and everyone did very well, with 16 individual medals and many making it to the finals.

The Irish Life Health National Juvenile "B" T&F Championships Day took place in Tullamore on Saturday 15th July.  Well done to Siofra Foley who won Gold in the U16 3Kg Shot with a throw of 7.74m. 

The best of Irish Athletes were in competition over two days for the Irish Life National Senior Track & Field Championships held in Santry. Emma & Niall Prendiville had a great week-end out as they competed in the Race Walk. First up was Emma in the 5K Race Walk. Emma produced a great performance to finish in second place in a time of 24:54.99. On day 2 Niall competed in the 10K Race Walk. Niall returning to competition after been out for almost four years fought hard to hold stay with the lead group. Eventually held out to finish in second place in a time of 53:43.79.

Day 1 of the Kerry County Juvenile Championships for U9 to U16 age groups took place on Wednesday July 5th in An Riocht Athletics Track, Castleisland. The club was well represented and everyone did very well, with 16 individual medals and many making it to the finals.

Day 1 & 2 of the Irish Life Health National Juvenile T&F Championships Day took place over the weekend. 
Cian Spillane was competing in the U14 800m distance race. Cian ran very well to finish on podium. Cian ran a personal best time of 2:15.03, less than a second off 2nd place winner. A great achievement for such a young athlete. 
Patrick Kearney was also representing our club in the U14 2.5Kg Hammer. Patrick was placed 5th with a best throw of 25.20m. 
Conall Whelan who has made great progress over the last year took part in the U15 3Kg Hammer. Conall had a best throw of 40.83m finishing in 5th place, which was less than 1m outside a podium spot.

Club Training:
The holidays are here so all training sessions are finished for the summer. But we will be back the end of August for the start of cross country season!!!! Best of luck to all our athletes for the rest of the season you are well prepared.

Club Weekly Notes July 2017

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
Well done to all the Boys and Girls who represented there schools well in the County Primary Schools Track & Field Championships during the week.

The Irish Life Health National Junior & U23 T&F Championships were held on Saturday 1st July in Tullamore. Rossa Foley, competing in the U23 category, was 3rd in the 35lb Weight For Distance with a throw of 7.11m. Rossa finished just outside the medals in 4th place for the Javelin (43.20m) & Triple Jump (12.07m).

The Irish Life Health National Masters T&F Championships were held on Sunday 2nd July in Tullamore. 
Jim O'Shea continues to shine with three individual medals in his O75 age category. Jim was first in the Long Jump (3.83m) and High Jump (1.25m). He took silver in the 100m sprint (15.30sec). 
Maria McCarthy competing in the O40 category was second in the 3000m (10:29.90) and fourth in the 1500m (5:05.41). 
Jerome Foley finished fourth in the O50 400m (60.07sec) and fifth in the 800m (2:17.84)
Sean O'Shea was 2nd in Shot, third in the Weight For Distance (5.04m) and third in the Discus (30.51m). 
Dermot Dineen competing for the very first time at National level took part in the O35 1500m distance. Dermot finished in ninth place overall in a highly competitive field. He completed the distance in 4:36.67 which is a personal best performance. Well done.

Club Weekly Notes June 2017


The County Community Games Athletics was held over two days Sat. 24th & Sun. 25th June. This is one of the most popular athletics events on the annual calendar for all juveniles in Kerry. We had many athletes from our club representing their town-land over various events. We would like to congratulate all who competed and represented there area's at a high level. The following club members won gold and will now go froward to represent Kerry in the National Community Games Finals in August. Shauna McCarthy U14 800m, Cian Spillane U14 800m and Liath Lenihan U14 80m Hurdles. 
Other medal winners were: Patrick Kearney 2nd in U14 Javelin, Eabha McCarthy 4th U12 600m, Natasha Myers 3rd U16 1500m & High Jump, Aine O'Shea 2nd U14 Shot,Sarah Palmer 3rd U10 100m,Ellen Kelliher 2nd U12 100m,Mairead Walsh 2nd U10 200m, Leah Foley 2nd U14 Javelin, Doireann O'Shea 3rd U12 Long Jump, Rachel Murphy 4th U14 Shot.
A special thanks to all our coaches who volunteered there services throughout the season to prepare the children for these events.

Round 1 of the National Track & Field League took place on Sunday 25th June in Tullamore. The Kerry had a women's team which was made up of athletes from different clubs in the county. From our club we had Maria McCarthy 1st in 3000m, Leanne Cronin 3rd in Shot and Elaine Norris 2nd Hurdles.
Rossa Foley was a member of the An Riocht AC team to support in the field events.
Round 2 of the league will take place on Sunday 30th July with the final taking place on Sunday 20th August in Tullamore Stadium.

Jim O'Shea took part in the British Masters Athletics Championships over the weekend. He collected gold in the O75 Long Jump and High Jump. A great achievement where the standard of competition in Britain is very high

The Kerry County Juvenile Championships for U9 to U16 age groups have been rescheduled once more due to clashes with other sporting events. They will now take place on Wednesday July 5th at 6pm and Saturday 15th July at 11am . Full list of events post in Kerry Athletics website and on Facebook. Juvenile Training: Outdoors on Tuesday's at 6pm in the Sports Hall, Farranfore. €2 per session.  New members welcome.

Secondary School /Junior / Senior training every Thursday at 6:40pm in GAA Grounds Farranfore. This is endurance training for all levels with emphasis on running form and technique. €2 club member, €4 non club member.

FARRANFORE MAINE VALLEY Athletic Club
It was a spectacular weekend for our young athletes at day 2 & 3 of the Munster Championships and we don't just mean the weather!! CIT Cork once again played host to the final days of competition, where the older juvenile athletes competed in a variety of track and field events over the two days. Between them all they took home five individual medals. 
Leanne Cronin, U18is, was second in the Hammer Throw (36.46m), third in the Discus(21.74m) and fifth in the Shot Putt (8.48m).
Patrick Kearney, U14's, was third in the Hammer Throw (23.17m ). Patrick also competed in the Javelin, Discus, Shot Putt.
Cian Spillane, U14's, was third in the 800m distance with a time of 2:16:47
Siofra Foley, U16's, was 5th in the Javelin (18.65m), sixth in the Discus, seventh in the Shot Putt, sixth in the 80m Hurdles and competed in the 100m sprint
Conall Whelan, U15's, was fourth in the Hammer Throw (35.65m)  & Shot Putt (12.11m)
Peadar Whelan, U14's,competed in the Shot Putt. 
Malachy Kirwan, U14's, 6th in 200m sprint final (28.65s), competed in the Long Jump, High Jump, 
Alice Nossis, U16's, was fourth in the Hammer Throw (21.08m)
Elaina Norris, U18's, was second in the Discus (16.63m)


This year's SSE Airtricty Dublin Marathon is expected to sell out over the coming weeks. If you wish to enter this year's National Marathon Championships please enter NOW to avoid disappointment. Date, Sunday 29th October.

We would like to wish all our juvenile athletes the best of luck in the County Community Games Athletics in Castleisland Track next week-end.

Club Weekly Notes June 2017

On Sunday 11th June our Senior & Masters athletes traveled to CIT Cork for the Munster Track & Field Championships. 
Representing our club in the Seniors was Rossa Foley & Kayleigh Cronin. Kayleigh was first in the 1Kg Discus (44.81m). Rossa was second in the Javelin (38.90m), third in the Triple Jump (12.02m), fourth in the Discus (25.57m), fifth in the 56lb weight for distance and fifth in the Shot.

In the Masters there was eight individual medals won by our four club members. Jerome Foley (O50) had an outstanding day when winning his age category in the 400m (1:00.95) & 800m (2:17). A great result following time out due to injury. 
Maria McCarthy(O40) was our only masters lady. Maria had a great day, winning her age category comfortably in the 3000m (10:44) and 1500m (5:11). 
Jim O'Shea competing in his new age category (O75) did very well also. Gold in the 100m sprint (16.48sec), Long Jump (3.79m), High Jump (1.20m). 
Dermot Dineen (O35) represented himself very well when he was 2nd in the 1500m (5:00) & finishing 6th place in the 3000m (10:41). 
Munster Senior & Masters T&F Championships, Sunday 11th June - Senior Results Master Results

On June 3rd Leanne Cronin represented her college, Killorglin Community College, in the National Schools Intermediate 3Kg Hammer throw. Leanne represented the school well when she finished in 6th place out of a field of ten.

Seven of our Juveniles traveled to Ardfert on Monday 4th June to take part in St. Brendan's AC Open Sports Day. They all did very well.
